Floreana island has 80 inhabitants, around 45 in Puerto Velasco lbarra and some more in the highlands. 15 people were born in the island. It only has one school and a telephone which is at the Wittmers. You can spend your peaceful nights on this island with the Wittmers. They have very good food and you can also listen together with their large family to some fascinating stories about the island and its inhabitants. Basic services are limited and there are no frequent boats landing in this island, unless you try to visit it with one of the scarce boats which land at black beach, which is difficult but not impossible. This is the best place on earth for someone who really wants peace
to maybe meditate, write or just escape from the noisy world. While you're in Floreana you can go Birdwatching to the highlands to the Floreana finch. Also try to visit Asilo de la Paz, which is the natural water source for the island. Another interesting excursion is to the flamingo lagoons and the nearby marine turtle nesting place. It is some 3 1/2 hours hike to get there. |
