Our NGO "Ayúdame
a Escuchar" Fundaye's key Objective in Ecuador is to
give financial help providing assistance and facilities for
those with impaired hearing, as well as support in Hearing
health to people of reduced economic resources which due to
their humble condition and poverty line existence makes it
practically impossible to be able to acquire an auditory examination,
a decent treatment and proper hearing aids.
In Ecuador around five percent (5%) of the
population have a hearing loss from mild to profound, including
all ranges namely: children, adults and elderly people. Only
one percent (1%) based in our latest reports can afford to
purchase hearing aids leaving a four percent (4%) unable to
rectify their impairments due to unemployment and poverty.
Hearing aids have been helpful for many hearing impaired people,
but most hearing impaired people do not buy a hearing aid,
because they just can’t afford them!
The damage caused by hearing impairment is far too extensive
to detail completely but, the main factors are highlighted
below firstly pertaining to all adults and the elderly.
- Stress and depression.
- Avoiding communication with parents and friends.
- Social injustice and disrespect.
- Social exclusion.
- Continued Poverty / lowly paid.
- Estrangement / Isolation.
- Increases in hearing loss.
- Disturbing behavior.
Most of These disabilities are also very
common in elderly people and can seriously affect their safety,
quality of life, and ability to live independently. Taking
care of such retirees also represents some expenditure in
medicines and maintenance that they can barely afford.
Children / effects from impairment
- Lack of communication with parents and friends
- Learning problems
- Retarded Language / Infinitesimal development in social
skills.
- Social exclusion (prime importance at these young ages,
forming their future personality)
- Disturbance Conduct
- Increases in hearing loss
Children suffering from
impaired hearing have serious detrimental effects on their
education which makes it dramatically difficult for them to
integrate with the rest of society. Scope for treatment is
very limited in Ecuador where there are a large number of
children with impaired hearing as well who do not have access
to proper treatment. Due to these and many other factors Fundacion
"Ayudame a Escuchar" Fundaye has become fully functional
and is willing and able to provide all the necessary assistance
and facilities for hearing impaired through specific projects
based on our daily experiences with hearing impairment within
our society.
