A
good base point to access the Ilinizas is Machachi.
The Ilinizas is a part of the Reserva Ecológica Los
llinizas.
The
entrance fee to the Ilinizas is US$5. The exciting peaks are very
popular amongst adventurous climbers.
The
access.- There is a turnoff on the Panamericana (unsigned)
some 8 Km from Machachi which most locals know, especially cab
drivers. Then, follow a 7 km cobbled road to El Chaupi. Keep following
the road for another 9 Km until you reach a parking place (with
a Virgin statue). You can camp here for free, but it's not recommended.
From "The Virgin" to the refuge (4650m) is about 3 to
4 hours' walk.
Iliniza Norte (5,120 m) |
From
the "refugio" it is some 2 to 3 hours' climb to the
Iliniza Norte through a not very safe but well defined trail.
So, be cautious.
Iliniza Sur (5,247 m)
|
This
is the sixth highest peak of Ecuador and a much more difficult
climb than Iliniza Norte. Mountaineers must be very experienced
and have a suitable technical equipment. It takes approximately
4 1/2 hours to climb this mountain. The southern area of Reserva
Ecológica Los Ilinizas can be reached as well from
Latacunga.

The
haciendas (farms) listed below have all horses for rent.
At
the Refugio.- The refuge is equipped to shelter
around 12 people, it also has kitchen facilities. However, bring
a sleeping bag because there may not be enough room. The fee to
stay the night is US$10 per person.
Hacienda
Nieves.- Located 2 1/2 km from EI Chaupi. Reservations: Tel.
315092.
Hacienda
San José del Chaupi.- Is located 3 km southwest of
El Chaupi. Reservations: Tel. 09-9713986. In Quito: Tel. 2891547.
Cabañas
Los Ilinizas.- These cabins are in EI Chaupi, close to the
main plaza.
Transport

There
is a frequent bus service from Machachi to El Chaupi. From El
Chaupi is a 7 to 8 hour walk to the refuge. You can also hire
horses in the haciendas listed above.
