| | Loja
has played a gateway role as the landscape merges both Amazonas and Pacific basins since conception and has been symbolized by a major monument at the north entrance to the town known as La Entrada de la Ciudad.
In the center of the city you'll find the beautiful Cathedral and Santo Domingo church (Bolívar and Rocafuerte) that have highly ornate painted interiors. The Museo de la Historia y Cultura Lojanas del Banco Central houses a series of local art as well as interesting history, folklore and archaeology and is well worth visiting. Loja has two well known universities The Universidad Técnica, which has correspondence students throughout the country and The Universidad Nacional.
Market days from Mondays to Saturdays at the Mercado Centro Comercial Loja (10 de Agosto and 18 de Noviembre). There is another market held by the Saraguro Indians on Saturdays, Sundays and
Mondays. There are also several craft shops on 10 de Agosto between Iberoamérica and 18 de Noviembre.
If you want a nice relaxing walk in a park. Two blocks from the main terminal lies the Parque Recreacional Jipiro. The park is well looked after and maintained and has a lake for boating with an island with spotlights that illuminates a large statue of Venus. It also has several sporting areas, swimming pools as well as an observatory and model replications of various cities.
Most Lojanos populate the area on weekends due to the many puppet shows, various live theater acts as well as using the park for various social meetings within families.
Excursions
A good day excursion may be taken at Parque Educacional Ambiental y Recreacional de Argelia which has very good walks into the forests and through to the Páramo. The park is located
some 510 m prior the police station on the road to Vilcabamba. To get there take a bus from city marked "Argelia". It is open until 17:00. Along the same road across the Parque Educacional Ambiental y Recreacional de Argelia a few meters south is the Jardín Botánico Reynaldo Espinosa. The garden is an interesting place to visit for a good collection of cinchona trees. | | | More about Loja: | | Overview | Orientation | Tourist information | Fun | Festivals | Shopping | Tour operators | Transport
