| Mountain biking in Ecuador: | Routes | General advice | Tour operators | | | Although still fairly new in Ecuador you can often rent mountain bikes for as little as US$5.00 daily. As well as breath taking mountain scenery's to discover some are venturous enough to ride 70 km east of Baños that takes the biker down huge descents to Puyo and to the outside perimeter of the Oriente jungle although some parts are bare with no road. Do take a passport as there are checks on route at Shell and do remember that you can always take a bus back to Baños and load your bike on the bus roof's top. | Routes | | In addition to the Banos - Puyo route outlined previously many cyclists head out from Quito to the South along the Panamerican (Panamericana) highway and although the first 30-40 Km is filled with traffic the last few km to Machachi is quieter and makes for a good stopover place on route to further southern beauty spots.
If your heading north take a bypass route through to the Middle of the World (Mitad del Mundo) before re-heading out on day two to San Jose de Minas for great views on the old road. From here you can venture up to Otavalo or its surrounding areas that are all pleasant areas for biking.
There are other routes that your bicycle renters can also advise you on so do take advantage of the local knowledge. Also do not push yourself past 50 Km a day due to the high altitudes you are cycling in and also remember that if you want a break from the Panamerican highway there are some adjacent dirt roads running along and at the back of the main road should you wish. | | General advice | | Do always check all the equipment on the bicycle for maintenance as well as checking with various operators if you have time that lie between Baños and Puyo (If you have transport) to find the bicycle you prefer for the journey.
Finally always take plenty of bottled water with you as many riders often experience dehydration as well as a good sun block and preferably a good pair of sunglasses or visas that encase the entire eye and surrounds as the dust factor is high when biking most roads.
In addition get yourself an up to date map (1:50,000 topographical maps) so you can distinguish roads with gravel graded quality in comparison to the cobbled stone surface or even lower quality that all makes a difference to the smoothness of your trip!.
