of Otavalo | Intag | The weaving trade of Otavalo is spread out through a number of surrounding communities and can be visited within 20 to 30 minutes via bus from the town center or by taxi. The main towns worth dropping by are Agato, Ilumán, Peguche and Carabuela. In the latter aforementioned town you may also purchase several crafts in the homes of the local inhabitants, an example of backstrap weavers may be found above the local Evangelist church.Further examples for loom weaving demonstrations may also be found in Ilumán close to the local plaza (northeast side) ask for the "Conterón de la Torre" family who will also show you the backstrap loom technique as well as various crafts, also look out for various hat makers dotted around town. Please kindly note that some tourists think they can buy weavings wholesale
but often the price variance is nominal in comparison to the markets vendor. | Peguche waterfall | | | Peguche is located around one hour by foot heading north then east off the main route into Otavalo. Once
in Peguche you can head around 2 km southeast to Cascada de Peguche, a beautiful waterfall. Near the falls you will also find pre-Colombian ruins, the actual trail to the falls is achieved by following the old railway tracks, on the way you pass by a forest which includes eucalyptus trees. See also accommodation in Peguche |  | San Pablo lake | | Laguna de San Pablo is another place of interest with spectacular views
of the Imbabura volcano. The trail actually begins at the south side of calle Morales also in Otavalo on various paths behind the train station. The lake itself is surrounded by a paved road and if you head in a clockwise route you'll also pass the tranquil village of San Pablo del Lago that'll take you through to the Panamericana highway where you could flag down passing busses if you don't wish to return by foot which equally takes around 90 minutes back down hills. The Imbabura volcano (4,650 m), is accessible from the San Pablo lake, it takes about six to seven hours to reach the summit. Another easier option to access the volcano is from La Esperanza, located south of lbarra. There is a frequent Bus service from Otavalo (Bus station) to San Pablo del Lago (US$0.30). the paramo along with a scenic crater lake. Other major lakes of note are above Caricocha, laguna Huarmicocha and further over is Laguna Yanacocha but do take your own drinks and food and warm attire. South of Caricocha approximately 6 km ahead lies Tocachi and Cochasquí and offers the visitor great views, allowing for no cloud coverage of Quito and Cotopaxi. Of note in Cochasquí are some old ruins, if you don't feel like hiking there are various taxis offering
round trips to the lakes for around US$ 10.00. |  | Cotacachi | | | Cotacachi lies between Otavalo and lbarra, some 14 km north from Otavalo, with plenty of leather goods for sale. Is a very famous village for its leather work. In the main street of town (10 de Agosto), there are several stalls selling handicrafts. to Quito for about US$3.00. |  | Cuicocha lagoon | | | This lake lies some 18 km west of Cotacachi at 3070m. The entrance is through Reserva Ecológica Cotacachi-Cayapas and the entry fee is $5 which is waived if you're just visiting the lake. The lake itself has a 4-5 hour walk circling it and from here you can see beautiful and awesome views of Imbabura and Cotacachi volcano, but with cloud cover threatening in the afternoons do visit early mornings for the best views while the Andes condor glides silently by overhead. During the walk do look out for humming birds who inhabit the area due to the various flowers including wild orchids and blueberries which are poisonous and although they taste delicious you'll require a stomach pump inside 2 hours within taking them as these are not normal blueberries. There are also 30 minute boat tours that can take you around inside the craters spectacular blue colored lake including the islands in the center costing around $US 3-4 per person for the motor boats, minimum 6 persons, occasionally you'll have to wait till
a sufficient group forms or pay the minimum for the boat equivalent to 6 persons. Accommodation and Restaurants

El Muelle.- (Restaurant) At the lake's bank. Transport A taxi cost is around US$15 (one way), or a truck (Camioneta) for around US$ 10.00, from Otavalo to Laguna Cuicocha. From the lagoon a stroll back to Cotacachi is a pleasant 2 1/2 hours walk.There is a frequent bus service from Cotacachi to Cuicocha lagoon for
around US$3.50. |  | North of Otavalo | | | Atuntaqui.- Is a beautiful village lying west of the Panamericana, some 12 km north beyond the Cotacachi road. The village is known for its sweaters industry. Its festivities are on the 2nd of March and is a good relaxing place for strolling and biking. pool. Reservations are also available through our online Hotel reservation form. | Intag | | | Northwest of Otavalo approximately 2 hours drive just before Ibarra lies the Intag Cloud Forest Reserve. Continuing north on the same route you'll find the villages of Apuela and Garcia Moreno. The forest sits on elevations between 1850m to 2800m and is privately owned with a 500 hectares reserve and 200 hectares farm. This subtropical area is covered in flora and fauna including orchids during the drier season beginning in July as well as rich in bird life. Within the Reserve is a rustic lodge which allows only groups of 6 upwards. The food is mainly vegetarian and although there
is no electricity the showers are generated via solar energy panels. Typical costs run at around $50 per day but the costs are more for smaller groups under 6 while the minimum booking is 2 days inclusive guides who are multi-lingual and meals. Also included in the main cost are fishing, horse riding and hiking. Accommodation and Restaurants In ApuelaResidencial Don Luis.- Basic. Gualiman.- Nice cabins located southwest of Apuela along the road to Peñaherrera. Reservations: Tel. 2953048. In Nangulví Nangulví.- Is located south of Apuela and has one of the most visited springs of the country, which are very crowded at weekends. The complex has four hot pools and another cold and larger. To get
there take a bus or truck from Otavalo at Calle Colón and 31 de Octubre intersection.Cabañas Rio Grande.- Basic cabins. Reservations: Tel. 06- 2920442 (in Otavalo). Junín Cloud Forest Reserve.- Is located further Garcia Moreno and is a 900 hectares forest with elevations of approximately 1,600 and 2,200 m. Ecotourism is being developed in the area and there are some lodges being built. The main lodge can be reached leaving from Garcia Moreno in a 2 hours ride or in a four hours walk. The region is very good for interesting hikes.Los Cedros Research Station.- With some 7,000 hectares of pure cloud forest, located on the southwest side of Reserva Cotacachi-Cayapas. It is famous for its orchid species and plentiful bird life. The access is between seven and eight hours walking from Saguangal, which
is west of García Moreno. There is a hotel along the road so, that the journey does not have to be completed in one go. To get to Saguangal take a bus from the plaza in Cotocollao, Quito (6 1/2 hours). If you're going by car is some 2 hours less. See tour operators in Quito.
