East of Ambato past Salasaca on the route to Baños is a 400 year old village called Pelileo. The town is quite modern today in comparison and has been labeled "Blue Jeans capital of Ecuador" due to its wide variety of jeans being sold there while it also, is the main market town for the surrounding areas of Salasaca.

Most of the Salasaca Indians are farmers. But, the Salasaca are known for their weaving abilities and produce beautiful wall hangings that encase incredible animal forms and bird collages as well as tapices.

Pelileo

The town's Festivities are held on the 22nd of July. Pelileo's Plaza has beautiful views of the Tungurahua volcano. There is a frequent bus service from Baños and Ambato (20 minutes).
