Portovelo:
Ecuador Travel Guide Aguas Calientes | Puyango | Write a review about Portovelo
Heading south from Zaruma lies an old gold mine town called Portovelo, run by an ex-mining community which built the main roads and were constructed to suit the owners logistical needs (The Vanderbilt mining company) and consequently were purportedly the main excuse for not paying export taxes by the mining family as they shipped hundreds of tons overseas.

The area is very hot and most families made their abodes in Zaruma, putting up a series of wooden homes on top of various hills as well as various chapels.

An interesting place to visit while around are the main heated thermal springs known as Aguas Calientes (Hot springs), located just 6 km from Portovelo.

Ecuador and Galapagos Travel Petrified forest of Puyango
Puyango Petrified forest
Although the forest area covers only 2659 hectares south of Machala it is infamous for its wide variety of bird life and has over 100 species as well as several fossilized tree trunks up to 1.6m in diameter dating back millions of years. As well as camping sites.

The local Puyango village has several guides willing to show you around the various trails and fossilization process. There is no actual hotel in the village but floor space or the odd room are rented out by the friendly residents.

More information is provided by Dirección Provincial de Turismo in Machala. Tel 07-2932106 or 07-2930012.

Professional guided tours to Puyango Petrified forest, are available as well through our online Travel Agencies and Tour operators network reservation form.
