It also provides a crossroads for visitors arranging various tours to the jungle and forest reserves and for dawn risers the views of the incoming rolling mists are spectacular dissipating into cloud form as the day rolls on.
This attractive jungle town is also the crossover point for further onward routes into the northern and southern oriente as well as travelers journeying back to Baños and Ambato. To Macas a further attractive jungle town you will head southeast while to head up to Tena you will exit from the north.

| Bus
There is a frequent bus service at the Terminal Terrestre (bus station) located along the Shell-Mera-Baños road, some 20 minutes walk from the city center. To Quito via Ambato (US$3.50, 7 hours). To Ambato (US$3, 3 1/2 hours). To Riobamba (US$2.50, 5 1/2 hours). To Tena (US$2.50, 3 1/2 hours). To Baños (US$2, 2 1/2 hours). To Macas (US$5, 6 1/2 hours).

| Some two kilometers north of Puyo along the road to Tena lies Omaere. A 16 hectares ethnobotanical reserve with guided tours run by Indian guides for about 2 hours. Here, you'll find huge botanical gardens with rare plants used by natives and the magnificent Río Puyo, where you can go fishing or swimming. There are other nearby reserves around the Puyo area and excursions can be fixed by the local tour operators previously mentioned. The most interesting sites are:
Jardín Botánico Las Orquídeas.- Along the road to Macas (some 3 1/2 km south). A small reserve with beautiful orchids.
Criadero de Vida Silvestre Fátima.- A reserve the protects wild captive animals. Located on the road to Tena (10 km north). Entry fee is around US$3.
Fundación Ecológica Hola Vida, Located some 25 kilometers from Puyo (close to Porvenir), offering attractive rustic cabins in the jungle and boat trips. |

| | Shell is located some 15 km west from Puyo and 45 km from Baños (2 hours). Along the road Puyo-Baños, you'll enjoy the outstanding views of the Pastaza valley and many waterfalls.
Shell is an American missionary center with hospitals, churches, schools and they also provide emergency services through the Voz Andes hospital (Tel. 795172). Also, This is the most important airstrip of the Pastaza province, a small village where you'll never get lost. Accommodation & Restaurants

Transport
There are frequent flights performed by FAE (Fuerza Aerea Ecuatoriana) from Shell to Quito, the main Amazon cities and smaller villages, running different destinations on different days. You must be very patient to get on a flight. If you're traveling to nearby villages it's better to do it by bus, it's faster and cheaper.
There is no bus station in Shell, you have to stand at the main road and wait for the main buses that travel this route either to Puyo, or Baños.
