operators | Overview | | | Whale watching has become a very popular pursuit for many tourists within the Pacific ocean particularly in Salinas from June to September. Salinas is actually Ecuador's best beach resort where you can enjoy and admire the whale's ceremony. Professional tours with luxurious yachts are organized in Salinas for the most exciting whale watching experience. Another good location for this activity as well is Isla
de La Plata. | | 5 Ports in the route of the humpback Whales | | The humpback whales arrive in the Pacific waters of Ecuador between June and September in time for the breeding season. Taking a tour to see them closely and share their space is a touching and unique experience during these times.
Every year, in March, the humpback whales of the South Pacific start the trip that gives meaning to their lives and their species.
The destination that they take is the equatorial waters and those that are orientated a little further toward the North, while the ideal temperature is (25°), such temperature is essential for their mating and the arrival of their new children. These humpback whales migrate all the way down from the Antarctic regions in an attempt to find a mating partner in order to reproduce. It is a huge return trip to their birthplace from where they originate from in the Antarctic waters where they traverse back to at the end of every year in search of food (crustaceans and small fish).
The second major reason for returning is also due to the fact that the submarine geography in the equatorial area is safer and less deep and so it’s easier for the young ones to be protected from their biggest enemies: Sharks and Orcas.
This return to home of the humpbacks, for which they cross over
8 thousand kilometers can take up to four years, an event that the Ecuadorians admire and share with parties and organized tours to greet and admire them.
Crafts similar to yachts and fishermen's “pangas” adapt to transport tourists to see these impressive inhabitants of the ocean that can end up measuring up to 16 meters and weigh up to 40 tons.
The five most important points of the Coast to see the humpback whales are: Salinas, Súa, Bahía de Caráquez, Puerto Cayo and Puerto López. Some closer than others to the whales’ mating celebration area.
The name, Megaptera novaeangliae or large-winged New Englanders, given to these species of whales originates from them being identified initially off the coast of New England. It is also of note that
when a 30 to 40-ton humpback jumps from the water along with its huge white flippers flapping, it is comparable to a large-winged creature. | | | Whale watching tours in Ecuador: | Overview | Tour operators | | Tour operators: | |
